History and Architecture
Westminster Chapel opened in 1833 when evangelical preacher John William Byrd rented the former theater building on Gower Street for meetings of the faithful. By 1840, the congregation had purchased its own site and erected the first church in a strict neoclassical style: a monumental facade with Corinthian columns and pediment. In 1877, under the leadership of Pastor Charles Geffellt, Chapel underwent an expansion: a balcony and side galleries were added, increasing the capacity to 1,500 people. In the 20th century, under the influence of the revivalist movement, the building was remodeled: the stage was renovated and a new organ was installed. In the 21st century, restoration work brought the interior back to its original appearance and restored the original wooden panels, cleaned the stone facade, and strengthened the cellars, ensuring the durability of the church for future generations.
Social Ministry and Family Support
Westminster Chapel strives to be a true community center, offering spiritual support and practical services to area residents. Every visitor is welcome to visit:
- A cozy Parish Café
After Sunday services and on weekdays, the Parish Café offers freshly brewed coffee or herbal tea, homemade baked goods and light lunches at a nominal cost. The Parish Café is self-supporting, with proceeds going towards community projects.
- Food Bank
Volunteers distribute food packages to families and single seniors every Wednesday who experience challenging situations. The program requires recipients to show a referral letter from their social worker or rector for receiving assistance.
- Little Stars Playgroup
Children ages 2 to 5 are invited on Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. for classes that include songs, art and Bible stories in a playful way. Parents can safely attend the service or take advantage of parish facilities knowing that their little ones are in good hands.
These programs are open to anyone interested in attending. Participation is free, only pre-registration is required (for the food bank, a referral; for Little Stars, an application is required on the parish website).
Room and Event Booking
Westminster Chapel offers its rooms and offices for a wide variety of events such as conferences, seminars or concerts and ceremonies. The booking process involves several steps:
