In the heart of London, near Westminster, there is a unique club – Dutch Pot Lunch and Social Club. Here older members of the Afro – Caribbean diaspora find a hot meal, care, friendship and a new community. The organization combines cultural traditions and modern forms of support, creating a space where everyone feels heard and needed.

What is the mission of the club?

The Dutch Pot Club was founded as an initiative to support seniors in the Afro – Caribbean community. The club’s name refers to the traditional cast iron pot in which national dishes have been cooked for centuries as a symbol of family, hearth and hospitality.

The main goal of the club is to offer its members meals, cultural activities, access to services and health information. Special attention is given to elderly people living alone and those who are socially isolated.

Program of meetings and events

The Dutch Pot Club is not just a place to have lunch, but an entire cultural and social cycle built around the needs and interests of older members of the community. Each weekly meeting turns into a rich event filled with warmth, attention and a variety of activities. Classes meet weekly, usually on Fridays, from 12:00 to 3:00 pm. Each meeting includes:

  • A Caribbean-style hot lunch. The menu is regularly updated and includes classic dishes such as curried goat, chicken stew, rice and beans, fried bananas and traditional desserts.
  • Social Activities. After lunch, members stay for board games, quizzes, dancing or just chatting over tea. The club has regular performances by music groups and poets.
  • Information Sessions. In collaboration with local charities and NHS representatives, there are lectures on health, care, financial literacy and legal rights for older people.
  • Holiday events. The club celebrates Caribbean and British holidays including Black History Month, Christmas, Emancipation Day and more. These days include concerts, buffets and charity raffles.

Each session is tailored to the needs of older people: the pace is leisurely, the atmosphere is warm and help is always at hand. Special attention is paid to entertainment and information. This is how Dutch Pot Club helps its participants to stay active and confident in the future.

A special atmosphere

Dutch Pot Club is a cultural space where history and identity come alive. For many older members, it is the only place where they can socialize in patois, share memories ofJamaica, Barbados, Trinidad or St. Lucia, dance to the music of their youth and feel part of a community.

The space is filled with the aromas of native dishes, kind looks and lively conversations. Not only recipes and news are discussed here, but also issues of racial justice, aging, and the migration experience. This environment fosters a sense of belonging and inner strength.
