Health & Safety Executive

HSE is the national independent watchdog for work-related health, safety and illness. HSE is an independent regulator and act in the public interest to reduce work-related death and serious injury across Great Britain’s workplaces.

The HSE works in the following areas: enforcement, legislation, better regulation, science and research, statistics, field operations, hazardous installations, nuclear safety and security, policy. The HSE does NOT deal with the following: offices (except government offices), shops, hotels, restaurants, leisure premises, nurseries and playgroups, pubs and clubs, museums (privately owned), places of worship, sheltered accommodation and care homes. For queries about these premises contact the relevant local authority department.

The HSE provide a useful table on their website showing who to contact depending on the area of concern.

The web site is also a good source of information for workers and business about health and safety law and practices including: asbestos, COSHH, RIDDOR, risk assessments, manual handling / lifting, stress, skin conditions.

You can contact the HSE 'Myth Busters Challenge Panel' via the web site if you feel that 'Health and Safety' has been used as a convenient excuse to stop what are essentially sensible activities going ahead.
